The Special Shape Rodeo: When the Sky Gets Silly

Giant bees, floating castles, and a balloon shaped like a dinosaur. The Fiesta's Special Shape Rodeo is pure joy, and a favorite with families.

Not every balloon at the Fiesta is a tidy teardrop. On Special Shape Rodeo days, the sky fills with the wonderfully absurd — enormous bees, floating castles, cartoon characters, and creatures of every kind — in what is easily the most crowd-pleasing session of the whole event.

Engineering meets whimsy

Special shape balloons are marvels of design, holding their improbable forms through clever construction. Building and flying one is far harder than a standard envelope, and pilots take real pride in the crowd's delight.

There is no cynicism left in anyone watching a giant balloon dinosaur lift into the sky.

A hit with kids

If you're traveling with children, this is the session to prioritize. The parade of giant, friendly shapes lifting off one after another produces a running soundtrack of gasps and laughter across the field.

Glow editions

On some evenings the special shapes gather for a glow, lit from within after dark. A three-story cartoon character aglow against the night sky is a sight that stays with you.

Field notes

  • Special Shape Rodeo days are the most family-friendly sessions.
  • Arrive early for a good field position with kids.
  • Evening special-shape glows are worth staying for.

It's gloriously unserious, and that's the point. The Special Shape Rodeo is the Fiesta at its most purely joyful — proof that wonder doesn't always have to be solemn.
