For nine days each October, Albuquerque hosts the largest hot-air balloon event on Earth. The International Balloon Fiesta launches some 600 balloons into crisp desert mornings, drawing spectators from every continent, and standing in the field as hundreds of envelopes inflate around you is one of travel's genuine wonders.

Why Albuquerque

The city's geography creates the famous 'Albuquerque Box,' a pattern of winds that lets pilots steer balloons out and then back to nearly where they started. Combine that with reliably clear autumn skies and you have the perfect launch site.

There is no photograph that prepares you for six hundred balloons rising at once.

The must-see sessions

Mass Ascensions on weekend mornings send hundreds of balloons up in coordinated waves. Evening Balloon Glows light the grounded envelopes from within like giant lanterns. Special Shape Rodeos fill the sky with whimsical forms — and both are unforgettable.

Surviving the crowds

Come very early, dress for cold dawns that warm to hot mornings, and plan for traffic and parking that test everyone's patience. Buy tickets ahead, and consider Park & Ride to skip the worst of the gridlock.

Field notes

  • Weekend Mass Ascensions are the marquee events — arrive before dawn.
  • Dress in layers; frigid mornings turn warm fast.
  • Buy tickets in advance and use Park & Ride to beat traffic.

Set an alarm you'll resent, stand in a cold field in the dark, and wait. When the sun breaks and the sky fills with color, you'll understand why people cross oceans for these nine October mornings.
