Dawn Patrol: The Balloons That Fly Before Sunrise

The Balloon Fiesta's most atmospheric moment happens before most spectators arrive. In the pre-dawn dark, a small group of specially certified pilots — the Dawn Patrol — ascends to test wind and visibility, their burners glowing like lanterns against the black sky.

The Dawn Patrol launches while it's still dark, gathering the wind data that helps the day's other pilots plan their flights. It began decades ago and has become a beloved ritual in its own right.

In the dark before dawn, the balloons are just heartbeats of fire against the stars.

With the balloons themselves barely visible, the show is all in the burners — rhythmic bursts of flame illuminating the envelopes from within and reflecting off the last stars. It's eerie, quiet, and gorgeous.

For the early risers

Catching it means arriving in the cold and dark, well before the Mass Ascension crowds. Those who make the effort are rewarded with the Fiesta at its most peaceful and photogenic.

Field notes
